Woodgeek Store was part of a fun Artists' Collective Showcase hosted by Chaitown Creatives last Friday at The Doodle Room in Calcutta. We had a chance to meet the best creative minds in the city, interact with them, witness their art and also showcase our wooden notebooks, wooden iPhone cases, and wooden sunglasses.
Zachary and Amanda of Chaitown Creatives have been doing a great job of keeping the community of local artists connected and giving them a platform to showcase their artwork to different audiences for the last one year. The Collective turned 1 on 10th February and to celebrate this milestone, they hosted a small fair with the eclectic mix of creative people they met over the last year at The Doodle Room.
'Twas a night of fun and frolic with food, sustainable and upcycled fashion, wood geeks, art and illustrations with 10 city artists!
We previewed our new wooden bowtie collection and bamboo tables along with our engraved wooden notebooks, wooden iPhone cases and wooden sunglasses at the Collective Showcase!
Every garment from LataSitahas a story of its own. Meghna preserves material and memories by sourcing unused heirloom sarees lying dormant in women's wardrobes to create stunning and innovative clothes for all body types that are always ethically produced. A shrug could be made from an old but never worn saree from the wardrobe of a lady in the city or sarees used in Durga Puja and Kali Puja pandals could have been used to make a t-shirt. Meghna upcycles worn sarees into beautiful pieces of clothing - from pants made out of entire sarees, kaftans, dresses, and shrugs - they're one of a kind!
Wisdom, Art, and Graphics! Namrata’s work is mostly unpredictable, fun, frisky, all things wishful & otherworldly. Her art is a manifestation of all the wildly tranquil yet explosive imaginations and idiosyncrasies that lay beneath her otherwise calm exterior. There is no method to her madness. This is the only place she allows herself to be divinely insane. She hopes her art will be the breath of magic and fresh air we all secretly seek. She hopes it electrocutes you into doing something radically awesome with life.
This design collective strives to preserve our rich textile heritage and tradition, and reintroduce them with their own fresh perspectives and palettes. They showcased their summer collection of apparels and accessories made out of gamcha - gamcha dresses, pants, belts, neck pieces - stationary, calendars and even dog collars with bows!
Inspired by chemical free and natural dyed textiles, Namrata wanted to create not only a product but an experience. All Biome products are sourced from organic, natural dyed, handwoven natural fibres, or other natural textiles. Namrata creates user-friendly textile products and sells fabrics and customized daywear and nightwear.
KSR creates garments using the indigenous weaving technique 'Khesh' that recycles and reuses old cotton sarees to create new fabric. It promotes the eco-conscious aesthetic of Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce through its commitment to work with artisans and weavers in West Bengal. KSR clothing and jewellery combines exquisite traditional craftsmanship with an international aestheticism, projecting a modernity that bows to old-world glamour.
Jit draws everything except a monthly salary. He is a visual storyteller based in Calcutta, with a studio called Jitch Art Studio. He is a keeper of sketchbooks and loves penning down every concept there for safe keeping. He dabbles with multiple mediums and styles and mixes them according to the concept.
Megha calls her art “Kathanika”, a Sanskrit word for storyteller. She desires that through her art she can tell stories of her experiences – stories of innocence, beauty, purity, simplicity, and authenticity.
Alisha's work is a visual representation of her connection with her natural surroundings. She finds comfort and happiness in trees that surround this urban jungle. The ecosystems that they support are her source of inspiration. She had us all play her tree identification game War of the Gardens!
Project II/A is an art studio that works primarily on 2-dimensional artwork. The two artists paint mostly from personal experience that inspires them to work on interesting subjects. They showcased landscapes and portraits recreated from memory or from life. Project II/A aims at engaging audiences by giving them a fresh perspective on reality.
The audience and showcasing artists had their fill of coffee, cookies and more from the 8th Day Cafe. They make the best chocolate chip cookies in town!
The Doodle Room was the perfect creative space to host the Collective. It has an inherent atmosphere for creative thinking, learning, experience, and practice. It is a multi-facility venue in Kolkata that meets an array of different needs for children, young adults & the arts community. It includes a dance studio, well-furnished kitchen, art & craft decorative hall, play areas and galleries. Along with regular classes, the space is available for rent and is an ideal venue for theme birthday parties, special workshops, rehearsals, exhibitions, artist showcases & residences.
