According to Greek mythology, King Athamus' second wife, Ino, resented his son from his first wife Phrixus and plotted to kill him. She induced a famine and falsified a message from the Oracle of Delphi to her husband that Phrixos had to be sacrificed to end the famine. As King Athamus was about to sacrifice his son, a ram with golden fleece sent by Zeus in answer to the prayers of Phrixus mother saved him. Aries, the ram, carried Phrixus safely to the land of Colchis, where Phrixus sacrificed the golden ram to Zeus. Zeus, in turn, placed the ram among the stars for its heroism.
